Being a film & media arts major, I have done some fairly extensive video editing compared to most non-film majors. That being said, most of the editing work I do is narrative and not extremely experimental in nature. I use the Adobe Creative Suite apps including Adobe Premiere and After Effects to edit my videos. In Premiere, there are tons of video effects options at your disposal. You can use masking to combine two separate video elements and make them into a single frame (like cloning yourself). You can also use masking to transition from one clip to the other seamlessly if filmed properly. There are also many options for applying video effects over your videos to make them more experimental and more personal.
After Effects is a refined program for doing visual effects and visual trickery. You can track objects and overlay things on those objects, you could make a lightsaber or composite the Death Star into your shot.
Lastly, there are many audio libraries online (like freesound.org) where you can download thousands of sound effects and edit them together to make something really unique.
